In situ observation of pitting of stainless steel by XAFS.
An in situ observation technique by XAFS (X-ray Absorption Fine Structures) has been developed for observation of metal corrosion. XAFS spectra were obtained with a special electrochemical cell to elucidate pitting: change of concentrations and structures of ions near the interface of solution and metal. It has been successfully shown that the concentrations of Cr and Br are linearly dependent ...
متن کاملIMPROVING PITTING CORROSION OF 304 STAINLESS STEEL BY ELECTROPOLISHING TECHNIQUE
Several surface modification techniques such as ion implantation, surface laser melting, have been employed to improve pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Electropolishing is a technique in which the surface roughness is eliminated through a selective electrochemical dissolution. The effect of electropolishing on pitting corrosion of 304 stainless steel (SS) was investigated employ...
متن کاملBending Fatigue Failures in Valve Steel
In the present paper the effect of defects (viz. pits, gouges and oxide inclusions) will be reported. Although certain defects were uniformly distributed over the specimen surface, the majority of all fractures started in the edge region. An explanation to this behaviour is presented in terms of stress enhancement in the edge regions due to edge deflections.
متن کاملLoad Partitioning in a Duplex Stainless Steel with Surface Strength Gradient and Residual Stresses
The load partitioning between surface and bulk was studied by means of in-situ synchrotron energy dispersive diffraction in an SAF 2507 superduplex stainless steel having a strain hardened surface layer with compressive residual stresses. Two loading cycles with a peak tensile strain of 0.5% and 0.87%, respectively, were successively applied and the evolution of stresses in the respective const...
